Today marks the true start to the 2012 Major League Baseball Season, with a full slate of games. There were two games played in Japan last week in MLB's continued efforts to expand the game globally (don't get me started), but today is the first day of baseball... all day.
For me, it's really marks the start of the summer. In my mind, nothing says summer more than sitting out on a sunny day, watching a ballgame, drinking a beer and eating a hot dog (even though it may cost an arm and a leg at a Major League Stadium). Now that I think about it, it may be the only time during the year that I eat a hot dog.
Unfortunately, it's not quite sunny out yet. There's still a chill in the air. But I'm ready.
I do think the first game of the season should be a bigger deal though. The Cardinals and Marlins played the true opening game of the regular season last night... along with the final spring training games. It doesn't make a lot of sense. The opening game should be the only game that day, all the spring training games should be done by that point so everyone's focus can be on the actual game. But I suppose the real event is today.
What event marks the real start of your summer?
Watching a game live wouldn't be bad but on tv it just never seems to hold my attention. Plus the Blue Jays never win, hmph...hahaha
ReplyDeleteHaha I was so focus reading blogs that picture reminded me I haven't eaten yet
ReplyDeletebbq pulled pork sandwiches and beer on opening day. go indians! pat hatt, i guess my team is playing yours today :p
ReplyDeleteand my Red Sox are facing Verlander today (yikes)
Deleteyup, can't wait to go see a game!
ReplyDeleteHot Dogs and baseball go well together, let the season start!
ReplyDeletenever seen before these hot dogs like there :))
ReplyDeleteTemperatures above 75 F mark the beginning of summer for me. Which is making things really weird this year, since it went as high as the 70s last month.
ReplyDeleteThat hot dog made me so hungry. I should definitely stop blogging right before lunchtime.
ReplyDeleteIn my country, the even opening summer is usually the 1st May, the Labour day, when nobody works and everybody goes out on picnics and the first summer heat begins.
ReplyDeleteBaseball starting already? Came on so quickly
ReplyDeleteI must say that while I can enjoy playing baseball games, I don't find baseball all that enjoyable to watch. I know though that to really enjoy a baseball game you do need beer and hot dogs. What usually starts summer for me is when the TV is inundated with so called "talent shows" and "singing competitions" that I don't watch.
ReplyDeleteFuck that looks edible.
ReplyDeleteWhat's unfair is that Japanese baseball has cheerleaders and we don't. I'm sure they have to risk dodging a few foul balls, but where's the fun?
ReplyDeleteholy foot-long hot dogs batman!
