This poster... (sigh)
How excited were you when you first saw this poster? It started popping up in movie theaters in late 1998 (The Phantom Menace was released May 19, 1999). My whole childhood I watched the original trilogy. I had the movie set on VHS and watched it religiously. It was my go-to choice.
Needless to say when I first saw that poster at the age of 11, I nearly exploded.
Looking back now, that image is just a haunting reminder of what could have been. I don't think even under the best circumstances the prequels could have lived up to expectations. But for myself and many others, the finished product fell waaaaaaaay short.
I'm not going to spend a lot of time criticizing this movie or the prequels. That has been done to death, and never better than by Red Letter Media. I've even run into some people my age who like the prequels. They didn't grow up with the original trilogy like I did, so the prequels were their first foray into the Star Wars universe. For them, The Phantom Menace works.
The 3-D release of the Phantom Menace has stirred up some bad feelings on my part. The eventual letdown... My 10-year-old cousin wants to go see it. But he doesn't have that connection to the original trilogy. He'll never know. He'll never have that anticipation.
For him, The Phantom Menace is just another movie.
What are your thoughts on the prequels? What was your first reaction to that movie poster?
I was hoping it would be good, but not by a long shot. They never live up to expectations because they are too high, but movies now a days are just plain crap and can't touch the older ones. As far as prequels go they are pointless crap! You know what happens and who lives and dies, they are dumb.
ReplyDeleteI recently discovered the Redlettermedia reviews online and got a friend hooked on them as well. Dear God, those reviews on more entertaining than the actual films! "OH MY GOD WHATS WRONG WITH YOUR FAAAAAACE!"

DeleteFrankly, I don't even remember the poster. What I do know is that I went to see it and it was flashy and whatever but it did not catch my attention at all.

ReplyDeleteBut I liked the weird al song about the movie.
I watched the original trilogy when I was too young to understand it, so I was fairly fresh to the newer trilogy. I noticed the boring plot/characters right away but it took several years for me to understand just how bad they were compared to the older movies.

ReplyDeleteI was so young when the first movie came so I actually though it was really good. And even though it didn't really hold up when watching it lately I still got great memories of it. The other two are not too good though, not a big fan of the original trilogy either.

ReplyDeleteGod, the acting in the whole prequels. Dear lord.... Of course, they DID have Natalie Portman in that skintight suit in episode 2... I'm DEFINITELY seeing Episode II in 3d, just for that. I'll have to fight not to pull a pee-wee herman. lololol

ReplyDeleteI don't remember thinking anything when I saw that poster. Maybe I thought it was some elaborate joke or something. They did disappoint me, though. Only prequel I thought was any good was not even a movie. It was the 2nd season of Spartacus, which they had to film because the illness of the lead actor. I recommend anyone who has not watched the series to start with the prequel, save for the first 15 seconds or so.
